What is so great about Hawks Cay and the Florida Keys?
The Florida Keys are a 150 mile long chain of islands connected by 42 bridges. On the oceanside, beaches, flats and nearshore coral heads line the entire length of the Keys chain creating perfect habitat for Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Sharks, Snappers, Groupers and many other exciting gamefish. 4-7 miles off these flats lies the second largest reef in the world which is home to Mutton Snapper, Grey Snapper, Black Grouper, Gag Grouper, Sailfish, Mackerel, Yellowtail Snapper, Wahoo and if you go out a little further, Swordfish, Tilefish, Barrelfish and Yellow Eye Snappers are all likely targets.
To the North lies the Everglades National Park which is a bird watchers paradise. Filled with migrating and resident populations, the Everglades is a place where anglers and bird watchers alike will have a chance to add to their life list of birds. The waters also abound with life. Home to schools upon schools of redfish, sight fishing with spin or fly is very popular. Snook fishing is also terrific in the park around the mangrove islands and up on top of the flats. Sharks, Tarpon, Jacks, Ladyfish, tripletail and many more species round out the list and add to an incredible day of birds and fishing.
At the top of the Keys lies Biscayne Bay, Key Largo and Tavernier. These clear water areas hold bonefish, permit, tarpon and more offering an incredible opportunity at variety and lee shorelines to get out of the wind.
If you were to travel to the West or to the bottom of the Keys you would travel though the Lower Florida Keys and finally to Key West. The Lower Keys is a clear water inshore fishing paradise. The backcountry is vast and offers lots of opportunity to get out of the wind and away from other anglers as well. Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Sharks and more all make their homes in these areas and offer world-class sight fishing opportunities.
Hawks Cay is situated exactly in the middle of all these fishing opportunities. SO with a skiff on a trailer or a bay boat or offshore boat, no water is out of reach of the marina at Hawks Cay Resort. There are over 50 species of fish that we regularly fish for and catch making this a true year round, all season, all weather fishing destination. There is always something to fish for.
