Message: Gentlemen,
Now that you have me getting ready for Tarpon season what size, weight and manufacturer do you recommend for a mullet cast net? I am in the Keys now so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey Pat,

Mullet nets are a great tool for tarpon time.  Let me first say that an 8 foot net spread wide is better for catching bait than a 12 foot net that doesn't open.  I say this because alot of people go for the biggest net on the market but may not be able to open it properly. Make sure that you can open the net you have before moving to a bigger one.  With practice, pretty much anyone can open any net, but it takes a progression upwards in size.

"I like a 1/2 inch mesh, fast sink net that is 12 feet for Mullet.  The 1/2 " mesh is what you want if your mullet are pretty good sized baits, like 6 inches or more"

I like a 1/2 inch mesh, fast sink net that is 12 feet for Mullet.  The 1/2 " mesh is what you want if your mullet are pretty good sized baits, like 6 inches or more.  The wider the mesh, the faster the net will sink.  Some go to a 5/8 mesh, but I just stick with 1/2 for my fishing.

If you are in deeper water, heavier nets and wider mesh may be advantageous.

My friends at Into the Blue put out this good video on throwing nets.

I like this video because it shows, step by step, two different styles of throwing but both are successful.  This is not a mullet net that they are throwing but the technique is all the same.

As for Manufacturers, I like the Calusa nets.  Some guys get Tim Wade to make their nets custom and probably get the best product available.

Hope that helps-
