The Florida Everglades make up one of the most well-known and treasured American National Parks. They are also being “strangled” by water issues. Since the damming of the Kissimmee River, the Everglades’ primary source of freshwater, this beautiful fishery has seen “endangered wildlife populations, declining water quality, water mismanagement, [and] extensive urban and agricultural development,” according to Captains For Clean Water, a conservation organization dedicated to restoring the health and natural beauty of the Everglades. The tarpon are pouring into the Florida Keys. Many people are headed to try to catch their first or take advantage of this time of year. In this episode of How 2 Tuesday, I go through the exact setup that I use at the bridge. We go through rod, reel, line, hook, etc. and we also talk a lot of strategy for how to land these fish efficiently and safely.

We started out this week with my friend Capt Scott Walker from Into the Blue Television show. Scott is a wizard with electronics and over the past few weeks, he has gone over how he sets up his radar to mark birds, how he uses High Chirp, Low Chirp, and Downscan to mark everything from Pilchards to Swordfish, how he uses alarms and fish icons to catch more sails, Marlin and Dolphin and this week he talks about the importance of the Trackback feature to scroll back and mark a waypoint on a spot that you have already passed. Definitely a load of good information in all of those.
As a guide in the Florida Keys for over 20 years, I can tell you that it is nice to know a lot of knots but it is not crucial to your success. What is crucial to your success is knowing a few of the right knots. Everyone who fishes in saltwater should know how to tie the basic knots to make wire rigs, bite leaders, tie 2 lines together and be able to tie braid to monofilament or fluorocarbon. With these basic knots anyone can feel comfortable fishing in saltwater for any specie, anywhere in the world.
I have boiled this down to 5 knots that every saltwater fisherman should know. I’d love to teach you how to tie these knots in step by step videos using high vis cord. The videos are very easy to follow and you will have memorized these essential knots by the end of the week.
