Answer

Hi Herb,

Thanks for watching the new shows.  The lights that you see on the transom of the boat are a safety feature from Mercury Marine.  The lights are called The MP Alert and it is designed to alert swimmers or snorkelers of moving propellers.  When the props are turning, the lights are on alerting anyone in the water of the danger.

In the Florida Keys we fish and dive often.  You can not be too careful when dealing with propellers and swimmers.  It is possible to inadvertently move the throttle into gear no matter how careful you are.  If this happens, swimmers would know to stay away.  Of course, having the engine shut down completely while anyone is in the water is the best approach.  With the new 4 stroke engines, someone might think they have shut down because the motor is so quiet but the engine might still be running.  The MP Alert is just one more safety feature to avoid any accidents.

I hope that answers your question.  Thanks for watching!
